Folklore’s Wisdom

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.” — G.K. Chesterton

“Myth is the public dream, and dream is the private myth.” — Joseph Campbell

Thoughts:

Folk tales are survival kits disguised as entertainment.

The old stories are not old — they are timeless.

We turn to fairy tales not to escape reality, but to understand it.

A Question for you:

What story did you love as a child that still holds meaning today?

It hard to pick just one fairytale but one of the earliest I remember was The Little Red Hen. I remember thinking how unfair it was that she did all the work and none of the other animals helped her. I felt bad for the other animals when they didn’t get any of the reward but understood that sometimes you don’t get a reward if you don’t deserve it. As an adult, I likely would have given them a second change though. lol! I also learned how bread/cake was made from seed to baking. As a young child, I thought that was fascinating and learned new words such as threshing and mill. New words are still a fascination for me.
